Summer 2024 Organizing Academy

Build Worker Power. Organize the South.

This summer, we are holding the 2024 USSW Organizing Academy in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

In November 2022, workers from across the South convened in Columbia, SC to launch the Union of Southern Service Workers. Now our worker-led union is digging in to build our power in numbers and ignite new levels of worker organizing.

Do you want to learn how to organize unions and build power for workers in the South?

Apply today to join a 6-week, paid Organizing Academy and fellowship program this Summer with the Union of Southern Service Workers. Alongside a team of skilled organizers, Academy fellows will canvass working class neighborhoods, recruit worker activists on the job, build workplace organizing committees, and learn about the tradition of worker justice movements in the South.

The goal of this Academy is to engage thousands of not-yet-organized service industry workers by canvassing working class neighborhoods and recruiting workers on the job. As an Organizing Fellow, you will be talking to low wage workers about the issues they face at their jobs and in their communities. You will have organizing conversations and help get workers involved in Union of Southern Service Workers chapters and workplace organizing.

Throughout the Academy, you will:

  • Learn the basics of organizing, canvassing & data collection
  • Elevate your knowledge of labor movement history in the South
  • Sharpen your skills as an organizer
  • Build the Union of Southern Service Workers’ base in a crucial geography
  • Lay the groundwork for future campaigns.

The Organizing Academy is a 6 week, paid canvassing program. It will run from June 24 – August 2, 2024. Organizing Fellows will work 40 hours per week, on a Tuesday – Saturday schedule. The wage for this job is $22/hour.

A car is required. No prior organizing experience or degree is required. Must be at least 18 to apply.
